Promised Land (Hike to Climbing Wall) - 12/30/22 - Ralyn Conner as Guest Blogger (Photos by all three hikers)

This hike was discovered about 2 years ago; long after rock climbers had enjoyed its secrecy. I hear that the wall is good practice for Alex but the hike, itself, is also fun. Ralyn gives us the narrative below.

A tenacious trio, wearing layers of clothing, set out to hike to the “Promised Land” in Red Rock Canyon.  It was a balmy 37 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind was blowing.  We each had dutifully reviewed the blog from 4/4/22 and one had downloaded the track.  Nature put on a magnificent show in Red Rock this morning with clouds ranging from puffy white to deep gray and then the sun with baby blue sky.  And did I mention there was wind, too.  We headed up Rocky Gap Road and into the La Madre Wilderness.  We recognized several landmarks from the blog and knew we were hiking in the correct direction until we were not.  All three of us missed the cairn directing us up to our destination.  We went left and should have gone right. So, our scrambling skills were tested and we made it via an alternate route.  Yes, we identified our missed turn on the way down.  The view from our destination and break was stunning.  Ralph discovered a tiny tree growing in a rock crack.  Nature’s bonsai, maybe? The rope, it looked a bit weathered, was still on the wall.  On the way down the cave was a calling and we answered.  Something had clearly been there as evidenced by a “natural bed”.  A great morning!   ~Ralyn

Stats depending on which you chose: Ralph 6 miles 1972' elevation gain; Charlie 5.7 miles 2087' elevation gain; Ralyn 4.4 miles 1492' elevation gain and total 3 hours 48 minutes (Probably some GPS bouncing in the first two)

Kay's official stats: 4.6 miles; 1500' gain
