Scrambling up to the Trail
For our second short hike of the sixth day of our road trip, we drove to the Squaw Flat Campground Loop B trailhead. The map indicated that there was a short loop that could be done between Loop B and Loop A but somehow we missed a turn in the very beginning and ended up doing a big X! No matter, we didn't catch our mistake until after we had bunches of fun scaring ourselves silly! The trail we were on circled around some slickrock at the base of a towering red rock ridge. When we got to the end of the hikable base, we looked up to find the cairns leading up the side of the red rock ridge to a small saddle.

Hmm, the trail is going up there!
Seeing a cable and small step indentations in the rock, we shrugged our shoulders and started up. It was steep and exposed. And, then ... we reached the top of the rock and the wind hit us full force! I guess the wind was bringing in the rain and we didn't realize that it was going to affect our hike. Nevertheless, we half-heartedly looked around for a cairn. Found one down the ridge but decided we needed to get down out of the wind and not go any further. We went back down the cable and steps and around the base to hike over to the other campground. When we got to the other trailhead, we figured out our loop was supposed to go down the other side of that rock ridge!

Double hmm, what's that? A cable and step indentations!

OMG! The wind is really BAD up here!

Coming back Down

I just like this.
At that point, we just needed to return to the car perhaps the way we came. On the way, we stepped off trail onto another sandstone ridge that we explored all the way out and back. No wind here. Finally, we took our group photo and returned to the car. Fun was had by all!

Stats: 2 miles; 340' gain; 1.5 hours
