Sunrise at Calf Creek Campground |
Friday morning, the group woke at Capitol Reef NP with one more day open for a hike. Eight of us decided to return to Las Vegas via SR 12 and Escalante, UT. It's a beautiful drive and the route runs right past the trailhead for Lower Calf Creek Falls. We caravanned down past free range cows and happy deer to find plenty of parking at the trailhead. We were there just after sunrise. It was still pretty cool. Laying our senior national park passes on the dash, we started down the campground road. Soon, we came to the trail leading up to the left.

Gathering at the Base of the Falls |
The trail is flattish so we had a good pace. We passed a pond, the pictographs and a small section of Calf Creek with a few small fish in it. Arriving at the waterfall, it was a surprise to everyone that had not seen it before. It is a rare waterfall found in the desert. Today, it was running strong and beautiful. After a break and photos, we returned the way we came and started home. A great ending to a great week at Capitol Reef NP!
