Lee Canyon Narrows O&B (from bottom) - 9/13/22

The Cheerful Three in Lee Canyon Narrows

Rain bands from tropical storm Kay were still swirling around the southwest United States. Three cheerful hikers sneaked into the lower elevations of Lee Canyon to eke out a small hike from the Old Lee Trailhead (across from the Barrow Pit). We dropped into the canyon on the steep horse trail and followed what is now a good trail up between the wide walls. There are several nice large cairns to guide you when crossing the washes, however, nearing the narrows, there is one place where you need to go down canyon about 20 feet to switchback onto the trail again. We missed this going up but figured it out later when we returned on the descent. Still, it gets a little messy right here. (Advice: Just keep going up canyon if you temporarily lose the trail! You will eventually find the trail again.)

When the trail crosses the wash all the way from one side to the other and just before it begins to climb up a hill to the left, we headed up the wash through the overhanging trees and entered the Lee Canyon Narrows. This is a great place to get cool on a hot day but, today, the weather was cool already! We took our break and photos and began our descent back to the trailhead. Still no threat of rain but we knew it would be coming soon. We enjoyed our little quick hike and saw only one other man and his dog!

Stats: 4.5 miles; 725' gain; 2 hours
