Lower Blue Hills of Utah |
Long Dong Silver, named by someone with a sense of humor, is located within the Lower Blue Hills of Utah about 7 to 8 miles west of Hanksville off of SR 24. The sandy dirt road leads north quite unceremoniously. We followed the two-track until we reached a parking area. We only knew it was a parking area because there were those stick signs that say No Motor Vehicles past this point. Our three Subarus had no problem in the sand on the way out. The pinnacle is still not within view from the parking area and we hiked from there in a northward direction. Our route curved around the corner from the left to the right just after we passed another smaller pinnacle on the left.

At this point, it was just a matter of wandering around looking for good photo angles. There were a lot of tracks in the dirt and it is wise to try to stick to them when exploring. The dirt is loose and it probably erodes easily. The hike is short but the photo rewards are high. The pinnacle lends itself to sunrises, sunsets and stormy conditions nicely.
Stats: 2.3 miles; 250' gain; 1 hour
